Day 1 – Christmas Music

Well, here we go. Day 1 of my 7 weeks of Christmas ((gulp)).  I know not everyone is a Christmas nut like me, so I thought I’d warm you up a bit by doing some “holiday spirit” posts. And what’s the best way to spread Christmas cheer???

Yep, Buddy, it’s music. I’ll admit that it takes a lot of self control for me to not play Christmas music the first time I feel a tiny bit chilly and have to turn on the heater. I try hard to be strong. But when November 1st rolls around, I crank it up as loud as I can, and I text my family “Merry Christmas”!  I come from a long line of Christmas nuts, but I seem to have the worst case they’ve seen for a few generations.
I asked my Facebook peeps (much better term than “likers” – so lame) what their favorite Christmas songs are, and here’s what they said:
I own a plethora of christmas CD’s, but truthfully, I haven’t listened to them for a few years now. Since purchasing my iPhone, it’s too easy to cheat and use that. I use YouTube when I want to listen to the same thing over and over and over (and it’s free). And when I just want to listen to a Christmas variety, I use my Slacker Radio app. It’s free, and you don’t have to sign up for any garbage. You can skip songs and ban songs or artists you don’t want to listen to, and they have TONS of stations. I listen to the Holiday Hits station most of the time. I’m not being paid by them or anything…I just love the app.  They also have a website for those who have their computers up for a majority of the day and want to listen to something in the background. 🙂  You can type holiday hits in the search box to get the station I like. No accounts or set up.
If you actually read through those FB comments, you already know my favorite song is Oh Holy Night. There are lots of versions I love, but two that stand out are the Celtic Woman version and the Mariah Carey version. I can’t say I’m a huge Mariah fan, but I LOVE to sing. And this version is so much fun to sing! You know those lists of things you’re thankful for during the month of November? Yeah, be thankful you’re not one of my neighbors (or children) during the months of November and December). 😉

Here’s the Celtic Woman version. If We were in 5th grade, and we were watching this together at my house, I’d fight you over which singer I got to be, and I’d pick the “yellow” one. Ha! Mostly because her voice range is the closest to mine (1st alto/2nd soprano), so she’s the most fun to sing along with.

And here is my second-favorite song. It might be a bit much for some, but I love it! 🙂

Snata Baby is a classic. 🙂

I’ve never actually watched an episode of Glee, but their Christmas album has some great songs on it!

And what would Christmas be without a little Kenny Rogers? This song features Wynona Judd, but my grandpa ALWAYS had the Kenny and Dolly Christmas playing!

Another peppy classic.

Confession: I can talk adn sing like a chipmunk. It’s a rare talent that I only share on special occasions. I can also do Smeagol from Lord of the Rings…that one really freaks my kids out. But they think I’m a rock star when we watch The Chipmunks!

And mostly any Christmas songs by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, and/or Fred Astaire are A-okay in my book! But I’m an old-flick junkie. Also happy-ending junkie. 🙂

And just because she’s my favorite.

And because my heart aches to be “home”.

  1. I posted on Facebook… but it was LATE last night when I did! Here's what I wrote… ‎"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan is always a lot of fun! But when I was little and we'd sing "Silent Night" my Grandma would always add her own harmonies as we sang… and it was beautiful! Whenever I hear that song, I hear her voice in my mind 🙂

  3. Wow! What a great post. I woke up this morning and said to my husband "two weeks from tmrw is T-giving. . .wow". Oct-Nov have flown. . .I never really got anything out but my fall wreath and bought a couple of fall candles so I guess I'll just move on to Christmas. This just jump-started my Christmas playlist for sure. I love TSO and Casting Crowns has the best version of Joy to the World. . .which is my favorite song. I listen to it all year long.

  4. So, I'm a huge Josh Groban fan and his Christmas album is fabulous! Not on his Christmas album, but available is his O Holy Night single. Just lovely. But my ALL-TIME favourite Christmas album is Chris Botti's December. It's just luscious. And romantic and just musically brilliant. Every year I decorate my house while listening. It totally portrays Christmas to me.
